Baltik100 / by Cristian Barnett

Having completed Life on the Line, my portrait project around the Arctic Circle, I have today embarked on the next adventure which will take me around the shores of the Baltic Sea. Planned as a five year effort with two trips to each of the nine countries with Baltic coastline, Baltik100 will be one hundred portraits, encapsulating a region which has seen shifting borders, huge upheavals and is more recently at the fore of global geopolitics. The project begins in Gdansk, a place where the 2nd world war broke out and which was also centre stage at the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is fitting that the opening portrait is of a Pole who is connected closely to a past which is arguably more alive in Poland than ever.
